The use of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion for insulin therapy has been utilized as a therapeutic option for some time already. Current models of insulin pumps are much more advanced compared to the models that were available in the 1980s. A bendable plastic tube usually connects an insulin pump to the patient. A steel needle or soft Teflon catheter at the end of the tube is used to pierce into the subcutaneous adipose tissue. The insulin is pumped through the tube using an infusion set depending on the needs of the user.
